Fox Body Mustang Door Hinge Repair
Last Updated April 10, 2024 | Bill TumasReplacing the door hinge pins on a Fox Body Mustang is a common restoration project that can make a big difference in the operation of your doors. The hinge pins are the bolts that attach the door to the car body, and over time they can wear down or become damaged, causing the doors to sag, bind, or not close properly. You can restore the fit and function of your Mustang's doors by replacing the old, worn-out hinge pins with new aftermarket replacements. With the steps below, some basic tools, a friend, and less than 2 hours, you can be back on the road with restored Fox Body door function.
How to Remove and Repair the Door Hinge Pins on a Fox Body Mustang
We chose the Mustang door hinge rebuild kit from Ford for this installation. It fits all 1982-1993 Mustangs and acts as a direct-fit replacement for the factory door hinges. Your install kit might be different from the one we chose, but the installation should be similar for all 1982-1993 Mustangs.
Before you begin, it's also important to note that this is a two-man job. It will really help to have someone to help support the door while you're working on it.
Parts and Tools Needed:
- Jack
- Jack Stand
- Hammer
- Punches
- Small Picks
- Vice Picks
- Needle Nose Pliers
- Cutting Tool
- Rag
Step 1: Support Door with a Jack Stand
Open the door to your Fox Body and slide a jack stand underneath. Place some rags on top of the jack stand to protect the paint and raise the jack stand up until it is supporting the weight of the door.
Step 2A: Hammer Out Top Pin
Perform step 2A if your Fox Body has an aftermarket pin installed. Skip to step 2B if your Mustang has the factory pins.
Locate the pin on the inside of the door hinge and use a pair of needle nose pliers to remove the cotter pin at the top of the door hinge pin. Next, grab a hammer and use a punch to knock the pin out of the hinge.
Step 2B: Cut Out Hinge Pins
Use a dremel to cut through the center of the factory pins.. Once the pin is split down the middle, use a hammer or needle nose pliers to remove both sides of the pin from the factory hinge.
Step 3: Hammer Out Lower Pin
Using the same process as step 2, remove the cotter pin on the lower hinge pin and hammer it out using a punch. Make sure you are hammering on the side of the hinge with the cotter pin.
Pro Tip: Once the final pin is removed, the door will be detached from the car, so make sure the door is supported while you complete this step.
Step 4: Remove Door
Grab the door next to the inner hinge with one hand and the top of the door frame with the other. Place a jack beneath the center of the door to support the frame. Having a friend to help support the door on the other side will be very helpful for the next several steps.
Step 5: Remove Old Bushings
Locate the factory bushings on the door side of the hinge. Use a hammer and small punch to pop the bushings out of the hinge. Repeat this process for the top and bottom hinges.
Step 6: Install New Bushings
Use some grease to lubricate the holes in the hinges for the new bushings. On the top hinge, place the bushing on the new pin to line it up with the hole. Use a hammer to hit the new bushing into place.
Step 7: Remove Factory Roller and Check Pin
At the base of the door, use a small punch and hammer to knock out the factory roller pin.
Step 8: Install New Roller and Check Pin
With the factory roller and check pin removed, grease up the empty holes for the new check pin. Line up the new roller with the factory holes and use a hammer and punch to knock the check pin through the roller. Once the new roller and check pin are in place, repeat step 6 for the bottom bushings.
Step 9: Install New Hinge Pins
Reinsert the door so the hinges realign. Have a second person hold the door in position while you reinstall the hinge pins. Grease up the hinges and slide in the new pin. Hammer it through all of the aligned holes. On the top side of the hinge pin, install a cotter pin to hold the assembly in place. Repeat this process for the lower hinge.
Congratulations, your installation is finished!
Keep Your Fox Body Mustang in Top Condition
With new door hinge pins installed, your Fox Body's doors should swing open normally again with no wobble or sagging. But don't stop there. While new hinge pins may fix a faulty door, there are still plenty of updates to make to your Fox Body.
