Mustang Rims At CJ Pony Parts

The wheels of our vehicle can say a lot about us and about our car. Wheels are often a reflection of personality. What kind of personality do your 1985 Mustang wheels express? Are your 1985 Mustang wheels an accurate reflection of your style and personality? Do they match the attitude of your Mustang? If not, it may be time to upgrade your 1985 Mustang wheels. Wheels are not just about aesthetics, though. Performance can be improved when upgrading from stock 15” wheels and tires to a set of 17” wheels and performance tires. However, before you can upgrade your wheels you’ll need to determine which style lug pattern you have on your Mustang and figure out whether or not you’d like to stick to the same lug pattern.

1985 Mustang Wheel Lug Patterns

Aside from the SVO model, 1985 Mustangs came equipped with a 4-lug wheel pattern. If you’ve kept your axle original, you most likely have a 4-lug wheel pattern. While not as popular these days, plenty of 4-lug wheel upgrades remain available for the 1985 Mustang. Many Mustang owners choose to upgrade their rear axle to a 5-lug pattern for a few reasons, but greater options in wheel selection is usually one of them.

Around 1994, auto manufacturers began adopting the 5-lug wheel pattern and wheel manufacturers took notice. At this point there is far greater 5-lug 1985 Mustang wheel options available than 4-lug, so many Mustang owners choose to convert from a 4-lug to a 5-lug pattern. This swap can be accomplished by:

• Swapping out rear axles from 4-lug to 5-lug — preferably 31-spline over 28-spline
• Converting rear drums to disc brakes
• Swapping out front brakes to 5-lug rotors
• Installing an Adjustable Proportioning Valve and New Master Cylinder

This may seem like a lot of work just to upgrade your 1985 Mustang wheels, but the upgrade presents some key performance benefits:

• Bigger and better brakes
• Hardier rear axle that can handle more power
• Wide variety of performance wheels and tires to choose from
