The MBRP race cat back has always been a very popular choice with S550 GT owners. For 2018, MBRP took a very unique approach to the race system. Today, we're gonna install it on my 2018 Mustang GT.

This is MBRP's pro series race cat back exhaust, fitting your 2018 Mustang GT fastback without the active exhaust option. Like all pro series, it's made of 304 stainless steel and features 3" piping with mandrel bends including an H pipe and a set of dual wall polished tips. The very unique thing about the race system is the lack of mufflers. Instead, it uses this custom resonator. This is a Helmholtz resonator. What this does is basically it's a specific chamber size that'll change the tone of its exhaust going past it. The best way I can describe to you how this is going to work is basically, it contains certain frequencies based on the exhaust path going through it. You ever have had a bottle of soda, bottle of water, you know if you blow across the mouth of the bottle, it'll actually provide a nice, deep tone. Well, a resonator's gonna work the same way with the MBRP exhaust system.

For this installation, you'll need a lift or a jack and jack stands, 3/8 ratchet, 13 millimeter socket, 15 millimeter socket, and an 8 millimeter Allen Key.

Now if you subscribed to our channel, you know we've had several different aftermarket exhausts on this car already. So we're gonna show you some quick footage of how to remove your factory exhaust for a beginner MBRP installation.

Removal of the 2018 exhaust is once again a two man job but very easy to do. You're gonna loosen the clamps up here, remove these two bolts for these rear brackets, pull these hangers off and you can slide the whole thing off as one piece.

Begin the installation with the H pipe. You want this bracket facing down. We're gonna install the factory clamps in the mid-pipes and put it up into place.

Just snug it down for now. We'll tighten everything once we go through and do all of our final adjustments. Okay, with the H pipe installed, you want to grab the mid-pipe, factory hanger and one of these clamps.

Now again, just snug down the clamp. We'll make final adjustments later. Okay, now grab another clamp with the resonator.

Again, we'll snug the clamp down. All right, with everything in, you're gonna reinstall the bolt for the hanger.

Then we're gonna actually repeat the process on the other side before we move onto installing our tips.

All right with everything set up, now we can install the tips.

Okay, go back through and make your final adjustments, get everything lined up and your installation is finished.

All right, so the MBRP race is installed. Like the rest of you, I'm dying to hear what it sounds like. Let's-

Definitely loud at idle.

As expected, it is loud. Let's take it out on the road and hear how it sounds.

So like I mentioned before, the race was definitely a very popular system for the '15 through 2017. Now for 2018, they completely changed it up. But they kept a lot of the characteristics of the older system. It is loud. I'll tell you right now. The race system, it's a louder system for sure. I would say it's a little bit of a higher pitched sound. When you get on the highway a little bit, we'll see how it sounds there. At idle, it sounds good. It actually is relatively deep at idle. But when you get on it, it gets loud and it does get a little bit a high pitch, kind of in a hurry. I'm gonna cruise right now about 65 miles an hours, 1800 RPM or so and it actually gets a very deep tone on the highway. It's completely different than what it sounds like. It's part of the design of that resonator that's on there because if you downshift and get on it.

Again, that sound again changes all over. With this system, it will crackle. It's gonna pop. I mean, it is a race system. It has that name for a reason. Yeah, the lower RPM, below two grand, it really has a deeper tone down low and then it really does change once you get above that. The tone changes pretty noticeably. Now we're cruising. I actually have it in fifth gear, but about 2,000 RPMs to get an idea and no, there's no drone from it at all. If you're 2,000 above on the highway, you're not gonna have any issues. It actually gets very, very quiet until you get on it.

Now we've showed you the street system for the 2018 as well and the race is noticeably different. Now before the street and the race, I actually thought they were pretty close to each other. The race was louder. But the tone, the characters of the system were very, very similar. The case is a little bit different now for 2018. The street's sounding good it was a decent system. I like the sound of it. It would get louder when you got on it for sure. But it's not anywhere near the level of the race and the race is really gonna be loud when you get on it. So while that kind of volume might not be right for everybody, if you're looking for a really good sounding system and you like that loud, aggressive, in your face, kind of high pitched, raspy, popping, crackling, the race is definitely the system to consider.
