Mishimoto designed this Baffled Oil Catch Can specifically for your 2016-2018 Focus RS. It is engineered to cut down on the buildup of carbon by catching oil accumulation in the PCV system of your Focus. This catch can kit utilizes Mishimoto's two-port, compact, baffled catch can with a bronze filter which effectively separates oil from crankcase vapors.

The included direct-fit silicone hoses connect the catch can with the crankcase and intake manifold. Installing the supplied mounting bracket, which is also a direct-fit, is simple and allows the catch can to mount directly beside your engine's oil drain plug.

We've already done several videos showing you the benefit of adding a catch to your vehicle. In case you missed it, the catch can's job is to stop oil from the PCV system from going back into your intake, which can degrade performance and, over time, damage your engine. In my personal case, I took my Mustang cross country. When I got back, I had over 3 ounces of oil in the catch can, proving they do indeed work. On a high-performance turbo car like our Focus RS back here, might be that a catch can is a must-have. Today we're going to install Mishimoto's catch can system on our 2016 Focus RS.

Due to the packaging constraints on the Focus RS, the installation's a little more involved. The concept is still basically the same. You have your lines for the PCV, your drain and the actual catch can itself. Mishimoto provides all necessary hardware along with a bracket for installation.

For this installation, you need a lift or a jack and jack stands, quarter-inch ratchet, 8-millimeter socket, short extension, 3/8 ratchet, 10-millimeter socket, 13-millimeter socket, T30 Torx bit, torque wrench, 15-millimeter wrench, 17-millimeter wrench, 11/16 wrench, 2.5-millimeter Allen key, 7-millimeter Allen key, small flat-head screwdriver and a panel removal tool.

Unlike a lot of other catch can installations, this one's not only going to take place in the engine bay, there's actually work underneath the car because the can itself is going to mount underneath. The first thing we're going to do is assemble it off the car before we begin our installation on the car. We're going to start by installing both of these straight fittings on the can itself. The in and the out both get a straight fitting. These are plastic and tapered, so you want to get them snug, but you don't have to crank them too tight.

The bottom of the can, we're going to remove the Allen bolt that's in there. Replace that with the 90-degree fitting. Once you tighten this up, make sure it lines up with the inlet. Now we can install the hoses and the drain valve. The short hose on first. Put another clamp in place. Now the valve. Lastly, the extension hose. Again, make sure the valve is in the closed position. You'd open up to drain it, and there your closed. Now we're going to mount the bracket to the can itself. You'll put that aside now and go work on the car.

We're going to start now underneath the car by removing the splash panel which is held in by screws and plastic clips. Slide it off and put it aside. Just to show you while we're down here so you have an idea, this hole right here on the transmission, this is where the catch can's actually going to mount. The rubber tube here will go through the opening that's in the front of the pan so you can actually get to it when it's installed on the car. We're not going to install it yet though. We want lines fished down first before we actually mount it in place.

Since this installation will require us to disconnect a lot of electrical harnesses, to be on the safe side, we're going to start by disconnecting the battery. The connections we need to make are actually underneath the intake manifold itself, so we're going to remove the cover to access the manifold, then we're going to disconnect everything in the way so we can remove the manifold next. I know removing the intake manifold on your brand new RS might sound a little bit intimidating. Honestly, it isn't too bad. The manifold's only held on by 5 screws, very simple to remove.

What we're going to do first though is disconnect a lot of these plugs and lines to get stuff out of the way before we remove it. To release it, slide the connector out. Push down this white tab, and slide the connector off. Now we can remove the map sensor. Disconnect that plug here, and just put that back out of the way. The throttle body will come off of the intake manifold. We're going to disconnect the tube going to it, and once the manifold's off, we'll disconnect the wiring. Now the manifold itself. Again, it's held on by 5 bolts. There's one down here, one there, one in the middle, one up top and then one on the side over here. Now we can disconnect all the harnesses that are underneath here. This harness has one of these little red clips. Slide the clip out, then you can remove the harness. Now, for safety's sake, I'm going to put a little tape over the intake manifold port just to make sure nothing gets in there.

We have to remove the PCV hose from the car now. To do that, you got to separate this black hose from this blue fitting. You want to be real careful. Start with a small screwdriver. Sort of like twist it and walk its way off. You want to grab now, is the hose that has the 180-degree bend. That one's going to go to the blue fitting on the engine. Make sure you put a clamp on here first, then you slide that on. This clamp I do recommend putting on the bottom. You got room down there for it and it keeps the clamp away from the plug here. Now you can fish this hose over. It's going to go above the coolant hose over here, over the starter, over towards the transmission. Make sure it's just out of the way and clear. Now remove this fitting from the hose we took off earlier. Just twist it and give it a good pull; it'll pop right off. Now grab a clamp and connect the other rubber hose to this. Doesn't matter which side you use. They're both the same. Snug up the clamp. Now we're going to fish this hose over the same place the other one went. We're ready to reinstall our intake manifold.

Start by reconnecting these small ones here. Make them easier to put back in. You bring it over the hoses. We'll plug in the throttle body then. PCV hose. I'll align the tab so it actually goes in place really easily. Then you get all 5 bolts started. Get them just beyond hand-tight. Now starting in the center, we're going to torque to 15 foot-pounds. We'll reinstall the map sensor. Before connecting this line, we're going to put that retainer back, the one that we removed earlier. Put it down into place and connect it. Put the line back in all tabs. Now we'll reconnect and tighten up the tube to the throttle body. The last step in the engine bay, we're going to reconnect our battery and then reinstall our engine cover. Now move back under the car.

Here are 2 hoses we routed down to the bottom to hook up to our catch can. If you notice, they actually made it a little bit easier. There's a little bit of a trick. We got one straight hose and one hose that has a little bend in it. If you remember, the little bend was the one that went into the intake manifold itself. That's actually going to be the outlet for the Mishimoto. The straight hose will be the inlet. Put a hose clamp on it. The curved hose will be our outlet. Going to put it up into place right here where it mounts. The last part here is to put the cover back on. What you'll want to do, bring the drain hose through there. Line it back up and reinstall the bolts. You're installation's finished.

Like I mentioned in the introduction, a catch can in my opinion is a must- have on any car, especially a turbocharged high-performance car like our Focus RS. Obviously the catch cans do work, they do a great job, and this one's not too bad to install. It looks a little worse than it is, but honestly, probably an hour and a half to 2 hours, you'll be back on the road in no time.
