The Fox Body Mustang is becoming highly collectible and valuable, making it a great investment for any classic car lover. With such a rich and expansive history, it's no surprise 1979-1993 Mustangs are now being appreciated for their design and rarity. The prices of these cars are starting to reflect the change in attitude, so now's the time to buy. Here are our top picks for investment Fox Body Mustangs you should be looking for.

Rare and Expensive Fox Body Mustangs

Let's start by taking a look at some of the most valuable Fox Body's around.

Saleen SA10

Many of the most valuable first-generation Mustangs had the name Shelby attached to them. But when it comes to the Fox Body Mustang, that name is replaced with Saleen. The Saleen Mustangs are the most valuable Fox Body Mustangs, and the most valuable Saleen is probably the SA10.

The reason I say "probably" is that SA10s are incredibly rare, and when they do sell, it's always a private sale for an undisclosed amount. However, some trustworthy people in the industry told me there have been owners who've turned down over $200,000 for the SA10.

The SA10 was built in 1993 as a 10th-anniversary Mustang for Saleen. When these cars were being designed, the owner would sit down with Steve Saleen and go over all of the options they wanted on their car. This could be anything from a supercharger to aluminum heads or even just different suspension choices. There were endless possibilities when it came to personalizing your SA10. Because of this, each SA10 is extremely unique.

The initial plan was to build ten cars, but only nine were ever produced and only eight of the original nine remain since one was stolen and never recovered. The SA10's blend of scarcity and uniqueness makes it highly desirable among collectors today.

Saleen SC

The Saleen SC was another valuable Fox Body from 1990-1993. The "SC" in the name stood for "Super Car," and these cars were definitely deserving of that name. They were built with superchargers, Recaro seats, and pretty much every other part that Saleen offered in their catalog.

The most coveted of the SCs is the 1993, as only four were ever created. When new, these cars sold for over $40,000. If you can get an owner to part with one, expect to pay north of $150,000 to get one in today's market.

Saleen SSC

Both the SA10 and SC are great cars, but they aren't very feasible for most people. If you still want a Saleen though, there are plenty of great investments at lower price points.

The Saleen SSC was the predecessor to the SC, and it's much easier to get your hands on. Even the base Saleen Mustangs are great cars and an even better investment for anyone who really wants a Mustang built by Saleen. While Saleen's might be expensive, their value will only go up in the coming years making them a great investment for any enthusiast or collector.

1993 Cobra R

When it comes to factory-built Fox Body Mustangs, the most valuable is going to be the 1993 Cobra R.

The Cobra R was a track-use car that was based on the 1993 Cobra. Ford knew these cars would be valuable in the future, so they put a racing license requirement on them. However, a few were still sold to collectors and remain undriven today.

The 1993 Cobra cost approximately $25,000-$26,000 when it was new. Today, a low-mileage one could be sold at auction for $150,000 or more. Even with a higher mileage or raced vehicle, you're still looking at close to $100K.

Even the regular 1993 Cobra is still extremely desirable. Low-mileage examples regularly sell for more than $60,000. There are even rumors of a teal Cobra with only 32 miles on it that's never actually been prepped by Ford. It supposedly sold for over $100,000. Even your driver-quality cars will still bring in anywhere from $25,000 to $30,000, making the 1993 Cobra R the most valuable Fox Body Mustang ever built by Ford.

Affordable Fox Body Investment Cars

So far, we've talked a lot about higher-value cars that are out of most people's price range, but there are still plenty of affordable Fox Body's that are a great investment.

As a general rule of thumb, the rarer the car the better. However, because these cars have been around so long and have likely changed hands multiple times, you're going to have to look hard to find one in great shape.

Affordable Rarities

Special edition cars like the ASC Mclaren and 1992 Feature Car are great examples of reasonably-priced investments. Rare options like the T-top coupe are also good.

5.0 and GT Hatchback

Speaking of coupes, the coupe is the king when it comes to investment and value. A 5.0, five-speed manual coupe can sell for close to $50,000. The GT hatchback is also a great investment and one recently sold on BringATrailer for $48,000 for a rare Reef Blue car.

Fox Body Convertible

If you're looking to get into a Fox Body but don't want to break the bank, a convertible is the way to go. Because they're less sought after by collectors, you're more likely to find one in your price range in good condition. However, the chassis rigidity has always been a bit suspect on these, so adding a set of Fox Body subframe connectors is recommended to stiffen it up.

Both the ASC Mclaren and Feature Car I mentioned earlier are convertibles, but other special edition convertibles like the 7-Up Edition Mustang make getting into a convertible an even better investment.

Should You Avoid Modified Fox Body Mustangs?

On the whole, unmodified cars with low mileage are going to be the most desirable and command the most money. However, the supply of unmodified cars with low mileage is only going down, so don't be afraid to buy a car that's been modified or has a few more miles on it.

Modified Foxes tend to be more fun to drive anyway since the Fox Body only ever made 225 horsepower from the factory. If you're looking to buy a car you can drive without a worry, a Fox Body with modifications might be the way to go.

Now's the Time to Buy a Fox Body Mustang

If you're looking to add a classic Fox Body to your garage, there's no better time than the present. These cars are only going to go up in price as as all the clean cars get bought up. Fox Body Mustangs are great cars that have a huge following and plenty of aftermarket support, so you can't go wrong with investing in one of these classic muscle cars.
