How to Install a Chevy C10 Carburetor
Last Updated August 14, 2024 | Kevin BrentIf properly maintained, the engine in your 1967-1972 Chevy C10 can last for many years. However, some engine components on your classic truck tend to show their age more than others. If your 1967-1972 C10 is running rich or showing signs of an inconsistent fuel-to-air ratio, then replacing the stock carburetor with an aftermarket electric choke carburetor can be a great option to improve your truck’s engine performance and longevity.
We’ll show you the full process of installing a new electric choke carburetor on your 1967-1972 Chevy C10 with step-by-step instructions. The install process is simple and should take less than an hour to complete. You’ll be back on the road in no time with a valuable upgrade to your classic C10’s engine.
C10 Carburetor Installation Steps
For this install, we went with a Edelbrock performance series carburetor. This is a 600 CFM carburetor with an electric choke. If you do have a Quadrajet or a Thermoquad intake manifold you will have to purchase a separate Edelbrock adapter to install it onto your C10.
If you still have a factory carburetor on your Chevy 350 engine, then more than likely you still have the metal factory fuel line going to the carburetor. For this install, you will have to cut that metal fuel line and attach a rubber fuel line in its place, so be sure to pick up some extra rubber fuel line tubing to complete the connection to your new carburetor.
Required Tools:
- Wrench and Socket Set
- Tubing Cutter
- Pliers
- Flathead Screwdriver
- Wire Crimpers
- Test Meter or Test Light
Step 1: Disconnect the Battery
Since you’ll be dealing with electronic components, disconnect your C10’s battery before moving on to the rest of the installation.
Step 2: Disconnect Throttle Cable and Spring
Using your hand, gently separate the throttle cable from the carburetor. Then, pull on the attached throttle cable spring and disconnect the clip holding the spring in place.
Step 3: Remove Engine Connection Nuts
Using a wrench, remove the two nuts that hold down the carburetor to the engine. These nuts are located at the front and rear of the carburetor.
Step 4: Disconnect Electric Choke Power Cable
Using your hand, disconnect the electric choke power cable attached to the side of the carburetor. Then, remove the remaining two engine connector nuts.
Step 5: Disconnect Carburetor Fuel Line
Use a flathead screwdriver to loosen the fuel line clamp. Remove the fuel line from the carburetor.
Step 6: Remove Vacuum and PCV Lines
Lift up the detached carburetor to access the vacuum and PCV lines underneath the assembly. Detach both of these lines from the carburetor using your hand. Then, remove the carburetor from the engine.
Step 7: Attach Vacuum Caps and Brake Booster Fitting to New Carburetor
Grab the vacuum caps included with the carburetor and install them on the front of the carburetor. Then, install the fitting for the brake booster. This can be placed on the front or the back of the carburetor depending on fit. For this install, we connected the fitting at the back of the carburetor.
Step 8: Install New Carburetor Gasket
Grab the provided carburetor gasket and slide it onto the factory studs. Then, place the new carburetor on top of the gasket.
Step 9: Reinstall Carburetor Engine Connection Nuts
Reinstall the engine connection nuts to the factory studs and tighten them with a wrench so the carburetor is secure.
Step 10: Reattach Carburetor Cables and Hoses
Reattach the throttle cable and spring to the factory location. Reconnect the PCV hose to the front of the carburetor. Next, remove one of the vacuum caps and reattach the factory vacuum line. Then, reconnect the brake booster line to the fitting you installed earlier at the back of the carburetor.
Step 11: Connect New Fuel Filter and Line
You will need to cut the factory metal fuel line for this part of the installation. Disconnect the factory fuel line from the carburetor and attach the supplied fuel filter and hose. Tighten the clamps on either end of the fuel line using a flathead screwdriver.
You may need to cut the fuel line down depending on your engine setup so it fits with your new carburetor.
Step 12: Connect Electric Choke Wiring
In order to connect the electric choke on your new carburetor, you will need to wire your C10 to accommodate this addition. For this install, we already had an electric choke carburetor, so the wiring was already completed. Connect the positive wire to the positive terminal on the electric choke. Then, connect the ground wire to the negative terminal and ground the wire at one of the carburetor support bolts. Tighten the wire connectors to ensure a smooth contact surface.
Step 13: Tighten Adjustment Screws
Use a flathead screwdriver to tighten the two adjustment screws in the center of the carburetor. Turn the screws all the way to the right, then turn each of the screws back to the left two full rotations.
These adjustment screw positions are meant only for the first time you start your C10 with the new carburetor. Be sure to perform a full tune separate from this installation to optimize your carburetor best performance results.
Step 14: Install New Air Cleaner and Gasket
Insert the provided air cleaner gasket around the top of the carburetor. Then, install the new air cleaner on top of the gasket.
Step 15: Test the New Carburetor
With all of the hoses and lines in place, start up your C10 and make sure the engine is running smoothly. This is also a great time to tune your carburetor to ensure smooth engine performance.
Make the Most of Your New C10 Carburetor
Now that you have an electric choke carburetor installed on your Chevy C10, you’re ready to hit the road with reliable fuel delivery and improved engine performance. Be sure to tune your carburetor to fit your C10’s engine setup.
