Upgrading your Classic Mustang's exhaust system to a dual exhaust configuration is an endeavor that promises to enhance both the aesthetics and performance of your beloved pony car.
Replacing an exhaust system on any vehicle is no ordinary DIY project. Installing a dual exhaust conversion kit is a challenging task because it requires an extra set of hands and some welding experience. Even with a relatively high barrier to entry, replacing your Mustang's stock exhaust with an x-pipe dual exhaust system can completely transform how the car sounds and performs, allowing it to stand out at any car show or on the open road.
A dual exhaust system amplifies your Mustang's engine and improves horsepower and torque. If you're ready to take your Classic Mustang mods to the next level, check out our installation guide below for a step-by-step look at what it takes to upgrade to a dual exhaust.

Classic Mustang Dual Exhaust Conversion Kit Install Instructions
Before you begin, it's important to note that this installation will require some welding. If you do not have prior welding experience, or are not comfortable welding, seek out an installation professional to install the exhaust system for you. If you do decide to perform the installation yourself, make sure you have all the necessary safety equipment ready to go.
For this Classic Mustang dual exhaust conversion kit installation, we chose the Magnaflow dual exhaust kit with x-pipe. This system is designed to fit 1967-1970 models. If you're installing a different exhaust system, make sure it fits your Mustang's model year.

Parts and Tools Needed:
- Phillips-Head Screwdriver
- Welding Equipment
- Car Lift
- Pry Bar
- Reciprocating Saw
- Pole Jack
- Hammer
- Drill
- Impact Wrench
- Table Saw
Step 1: Remove the Back Seat
Remove the screws and trim clips holding the back seat in place. Once the seat is loose, remove it from the cab and set it aside. For the remaining steps you will need to raise the car.
Step 2: Remove Old Exhaust Hangers, Pipes, and Muffler
Use a saw to cut through the exhaust piping and separate the muffler. Use a pry bar to remove the hangers from the base of the frame.
Step 3: Lay Out the New Exhaust System
Before you begin installing the new exhaust system, it's a good idea to lay out all of the parts on the ground, so you'll have a better idea of how they will fit together underneath your Mustang.
Step 4: Align New Muffler, Isolator, and Hanger
Take the muffler and isolator from your new exhaust kit and line it up in front of the rear axle. Align the tailpipe as well. The bend in the pipe will go over the rear axle.
Pro Tip: It's best to use a pole jack to hold the muffler in place while you adjust the tailpipe. You may also want an extra set of hands.
Step 5: Mark and Drill Hanger Mounting Holes
Once the muffler, isolator, and hanger are in position, mark the mounting location on the frame. Remove the assembly, and drill mounting holes for the muffler hanger.
Step 6: Align and Connect Pipes to Muffler
Realign the exhaust pipes, and attach them at the connecting point. Tighten down the attached connector with a wrench.
Step 7: Mount the Muffler
Locate the previously drilled holes. Use the supplied hardware to mount the muffler hanger. Tighten down the bolts.
Step 8: Mount Additional Pipe Hangers
Align the hangers in the desired locations. Use a screwdriver and hammer to make a small pilot hole at the mounting location. Drill out the hole for each hanger. Head back to the cab where you removed the seats, and install the mounting bolts, then tighten down the bolts.
Step 9: Weld the Pipes to the Hangers
Position the pipes so they are in contact with the installed hangers and weld the connection together.
Step 10: Measure and Cut Front Pipe Connection
Locate the universal front pipe connector and line it up with both the x-pipe and header or exhaust manifold. Mark the length required and cut the pipe with a table saw. Slide the pipe into position and tighten down the bolts on the supplied connector to secure the connection. Repeat this process for the other side of the exhaust system.
Pro Tip: Don't copy the front pipe length for the other side of the exhaust. Measure and cut from scratch to make sure the fitment is correct.
Step 11: Weld the X-Pipe Connection to the Exhaust Header
Align the front pipe connector in its final location and weld it to the header. Make sure the entire connection is secure. Once the header connection is secure, perform a tack weld on each of the fitting connections to make sure they stay in place.
Step 12: Test the New Exhaust System
Once everything is installed and welded securely, start up your mustang and test out the new exhaust system. Make sure everything is working correctly and enjoy the awesome exhaust note!
Congratulations, You're all done!
