Classic Mustang Headlight Switch Install

Last Updated January 17, 2024 | Kevin Brent

Your Classic Mustang's headlights are vital for safety on the road, so it's important to make sure the electrical connections are working properly. The headlight switch in particular carries a lot of current, especially on modified Mustangs with halogen headlights. Over time, the switch wires can corrode and age, causing your headlights to flicker or cycle on and off to prevent the switch from overheating. This requires immediate replacement. The good news is that swapping out your 1965-1968 Mustang's headlight switch for an aftermarket replacement is a cheap and easy repair.

Check out our step-by-step instructions below for a comprehensive guide on how to install a headlight switch on your classic Mustang. With a few simple tools and less than an hour, you'll be back on the road with a functional headlight switch.

Tools Needed:

  • Flat Head Screwdriver

How to Install a Headlight Switch on a Classic Mustang

For this install, we chose a direct-fit replacement Classic Mustang headlight switch that fits 1965-1968 Mustangs. Before you begin, make sure the part you have is compatible with your Mustang's year and model.

Step 1: Locate Headlight Switch Spacer

Grab your new switch and locate where the wiring harness attaches to the front of the switch. The spacer to the right may be integrated, but it might be a separate piece. Make sure you know where each section of the switch is located.

The back side of the switch has a small button, which is used to release the knob and shaft. Make sure the switch is connected to the shaft.
