How to Clean and Oil Your K&N Filter

One of the biggest advantages to installing an aftermarket, reusable air filter is the ability to clean it after it inevitably gets full of dirt and debris. This limits horsepower and fuel economy. Normally, you'd have to replace your old, dirty filter with a new one but a reusable filter from brands like K&N avoids this. However, many enthusiasts don't know how to properly clean and oil their reusable filter. The process is relatively easy and can be done by mechanics of any skill level with a few simple tools.

How to Clean a K&N Reuseable Air Filter

We're going to clean and oil a K&N filter in this article, but the process is largely the same for other oiled filters.The process changes a little bit if you have a dry filter.

Parts and Tools Needed:

  • Screwdriver
  • Air Filter Cleaning Kit
  • Socket Wrench

Step 1: Open the Hood

Open the hood to access the engine bay.

Step 2: Remove the Air Filter

Remove your aftermarket air filter from the air intake.

Step 3: Remove Dirt and Debris

Lightly tap your air filter on a flat surface while slowly rotating the filter to loosen any large dirt and debris.

Step 4: Spray Cleaner

Use the included air filter cleaner to spray the filter. Let the filter sit for around 10 minutes.

Step 5: Rinse the Filter Out

Gently rinse out the filter from the inside out using low-pressure water from a sink.

Step 6: Dry the Filter

Let the filter dry naturally in an area with good ventilation.

Step 7: Reoil the Filter

Use the included air filter oil to spray an even coating over the entire filter.

Step 8: Let the Filter Sit

Let the filter sit in an area with good ventilation and let dry.

Step 9: Reinstall the Air Filter

Reinstall the air filter using the factory hardware.
