How to Unlock a 2015-2023 Mustang with a Key
Last Updated August 8, 2023 | Bill TumasOne of the worst feelings is when you press unlock on your Mustang's key fob and nothing happens. Whether your S550's battery died or you need to replace your Mustang's key fob battery, you still need to get into your car and you can't.
Luckily, Ford included a security key just for this exact scenario. In this article, we're going to show you where this security key is located and how to use it to unlock your S550 Mustang.
S550 Mustang Security Key Location
For a 2015-2017 S550 Mustang, you're going to want to pull the tab on the back of the key fob until the two halves separate. In the space between them, you'll find the security key.
For a 2018-2023 Mustang, you have to squeeze the tab at the top of the fob and slide the key out from inside. Take a look at this picture to see exactly where the tab is located:

If you have an F-150 or a Bronco, Ford made it easy and put a key slot right in the door handle. They felt Mustang drivers wouldn't want to see the keyhole on the door handle, so they actually hid it underneath a cover. You'll have to remove the cover to get to the keyhole.
How to Remove the S550 Mustang's Keyhole Cover
To be frank, this process can be extremely frustrating, and it's harder than Ford makes it sound. However, there are a few things you can do to make it easier on yourself.
- Start by sliding your key into the designated slot on the bottom of the cover and push up until you feel resistance.
- Slide the cover to the right. You can usually get away with just using your hands, but sometimes a plastic pry bar can make the process easier.
- After you've removed the cover, the keyhole will be exposed and you can unlock your car.
Put Your Security Key Back So You Don't Lose It!
Now that you've successfully unlocked your S550 Mustang, you can put the security key back into the fob for future use.
To put the cover back over the keyhole, line up the cover so that it's just over the lock and then push and slide the cover to the left until it clicks into place.
While this whole process can be tricky, take your time and you'll be back in your Mustang in no time.
