2015-2023 Mustang Decklid Panel Install
Last Updated November 28, 2023 | Bill TumasCosmetic mods are an important part of any enthusiast build. While they don't necessarily increase performance or add power, they're a great way to customize your build and make it stand out from the crowd. Installing a rear decklid panel on your Mustang is the perfect way to overhaul the look of your ride's rear end.
In this article, we're going to show you how to properly install a Mustang decklid panel on your S550. We're installing the Ford Performance deckild, but the process is largely the same for any brand or style. Check out the video below for a more in-depth guide.

Mustang Rear Decklid Panel Install Instructions
The Ford Performance rear decklid panel is designed to fit any S550 Mustang, but it mimics the look of the 2020-2022 GT500.
Step 1: Open the Trunk
Open the trunk so you can access the panel on the underside of the trunk lid.
Step 2: Remove the Panel on the Underside of the Trunk
Remove the plastic pins and trunk latch cover plate with the plastic pry bar. Then, unscrew the two plastic plugs on either side of the trunk latch. The felt panel should come right off.
Step 3: Remove the Backup Camera Harness
Locate where the backup camera harness connects and gently disconnect the connector.
Step 4: Remove Screws
Use the pry bar to locate and remove the plastic covers on the 4 screws holding the rear decklid panel in place. There are two covers and they're on either side of the trunk lid. Then, remove the 4 screws.
Step 5: Remove the Clips Holding the Decklid Panel in Place
Unclip the 4 clips holding the rear decklid panel in place using the plastic pry bar. There are two on either side of the backup camera.
Tip: Cover up your paint with some painter's tape to protect it from any potential scuffs or scratches.
Step 6: Adjust the Teeth of the Clips
After removing the stock panel, take your flathead screwdriver and gently bend the teeth back into place. Be careful not to push them down too much.
Step 7: Move Backup Camera to Aftermarket Panel
Remove the backup camera from the stock panel and install it onto your new panel.
Step 8: Attach the New Decklid Panel
Align the clips on the aftermarket panel with the correct holes and snap the panel into place.
Step 9: Reinstall the Screws and Covers
Reinstall the 4 screws we removed earlier and then snap the plastic covers back into place.
Tip: Be careful not to overtighten the screws because you're screwing into carbon fiber. Too much pressure can cause the carbon fiber to crack or snap.
Step 10: Plug in the Backup Camera
Plug your backup camera into the connector.
Step 11: Reinstall the Interior Trunk Lid Cover
Reinstall the interior trunk lid cover by snapping in all of the plastic clips and screwing in the two plastic plugs.
Then, reattach the trunk latch cover.
Congratulations, you're all done!
