The introduction of the 2011 Mustang marked the return of the iconic 5-liter badge to the Mustang’s Fender. While these chrome badges look great, many enthusiasts today prefer more of a blacked out look. Today we’re going to install a set of these blacked out 5-liter badges on our 2013 Gotta Have It Street car. Blacked out 5-liter badges are the same size and shape as the factory badges on 2011 and up Mustangs. They install with double stick tape. Unlike the factory badges, there’s no alignment tabs making it useful on pretty much any 5-liter powered vehicle. In our case we chose to paint the dot green to make it match our 2013’s paint.

Here you can see it’s the same size and shape as our factory emblem. The first thing we’re going to do for installation is to remove the factory emblem. The factory emblems are held on by an extremely strong double stick tape. Two ways you can get it off, but before you try to mess with it you want to put tape around the outside edge to make sure you don’t damage your paint.

Quite often removing a badge using some high strength fishing line and fishing it behind the badge works pretty well. We found this new tape they use is kind of hard to get through. We’re going to use a plastic pry bar instead and gently pry it away from the body. Unfortunately, many times your factory emblem will separate when you remove it.

Once you remove the emblem you have this thick black residue tape leftover. You don’t want to leave this on the car because you’re not going to get a good adhere with your new emblem. You want to take off the bigger pieces by hand and once we’re down a bit further some sort of solvent to remove the rest of it. Be careful you don’t use anything like paint thinner because it can harm the paint of the car.

I’m going to use some solvent to clean up the residual. I’m going to use a little rubbing alcohol to clean the surface. We’ll leave the top and bottom pieces of tape on to use as a template, but we don’t need to keep the sides on there anymore as long as we cover up our holes. Now I’ll remove the backing from our new emblem and line it up with our tape marks. Your engine cover is going to use the same 5-0 badge as the fender, so you can use the blacked out emblem here as well.

Our blacked out 5-0 badges look great with the black and green theme we have going on with our street car. Installation takes roughly 30 to 45 minutes per side depending on how easily the factory emblems come off. You’ll be back on the road in no time.
