Well, the 4 cylinder is here to stay. It's always going to sound like a 4 cylinder because it's simply 4 cylinders shy of giving you that V-8 growl. That doesn't mean that we can't sound better.
We've had great results with Roush exhaust systems on previous models. Today we're going to install their axle back system on our EcoBoost project car. The Roush system is made of T 304 stainless steel including the polished 304 stainless steel rolled double wall tips. The system will require cutting for installation. Besides that is a direct bolt on, on your Eco-Boost or will also fit your V-6 Mustang. All Roush mufflers use a straight through design to give you a nice aggressive tone, also keeping drone at a minimum.
We'll start off with some factory exhaust clips. Our EcoBoost currently is 100% factory exhaust including the down pipe. Factory exhaust definitely on the quiet side. Also has that 4 cylinder sound.
Let's get started with our Roush. For this installation we need a lift or a jack and jack stands, marker, sawzall, file, 3/8 ratchet, 15 millimeter socket and safety glasses.
Like all axle back systems with the 2015 Mustang, you are going to have to cut to do the installation. In the case of the Roush the instructions make it pretty clear. What they tell you to do is to cut at the end of the tangent of the curve. I know we all paid attention in geometry class. If you need a refresher the tangent is where the curve ends and flattens out. What you do is go to the curve here. The pipe almost has a mark where you want to cut. Follow to the end of the curve where it's flat. Make a little mark and that's where we're going to cut.
Since the muffler tip will go up once you cut it, we would suggest putting some rags or something in there to protect the balance especially in our case we wouldn't want to damage our carbon fiber. That will stop it from going too high and damaging anything.
On the car we found a sawzall is the best thing to use to cut through here. If you want to you can put something behind to protect the suspension. As long as you're careful you shouldn't have any problems.
Now we'll just slide it up out of the hanger by moving it forward and put it aside. Want to make sure once you cut it the steel back through, just deburr it real quick. Make sure there's no sharp edges.
Now put the clamp on. Slide that over. Start by putting the new muffler up into the hanger. What we'll do is kind of turn it in place here. Slide it over our cut and move the clamp over. Now we'll tighten up the clamp. Don't use an air impact on this because you can damage the clamp. Either a low torque electric or do it by hand.
Now the same thing with our tip, put one of our clamps in place. Tip in. Get it lined up roughly where we want it and we can tighten down.
Repeat the process on the other side and installation's finished.
Now let's try it out with our Roush exhaust. It's not real loud inside the cabin. You can definitely tell it has an aftermarket sound to it. It does have that Roush signature sound with just a little bit of a different tone because of the 4 cylinder.
The Roush axle back added a nice aggressive sound to our EcoBoost Mustang. The sound is definitely signature Roush. The muffler has a very similar sound to other ones we've installed with the tone being a little bit different because obviously like I said it is a 4 cylinder Mustang. Like all Roush performance products the fit and finish is excellent. The installation is pretty straight forward. It will probably take you around an hour and you'll be back on the road in no time.
