I attempted to install this weekend and it appears the speakers are too deep and will require some modifications to the car.  Am I missing something?

Watch Bill's installation video - he walks you thru the installation, so you can see what, if anything, you might be missing.

Speaker Kick Panel With 2-Way 160 Watt Speaker Pair Coupe/Fastback 1965-1966 Video Transcript
By Bill Tumas: When we upgrade the stereo of the weekend wrench project car we added a nice little stereo speaker to the dash. While it sounds good, the small drivers are kind of limited in how much base output they're going to produce. Today we're going to upgrade our sound system by installing our six and a half inch kick panel speaker kit.

The kick panel speaker kit's a great way to upgrade the sound in your Mustang without making any kind of permanent modifications. We're going to install it in place of your factory kick panels and have a six and a half inch one hundred and sixty watt speaker which should give us some nice sound for the front of our Mustang. The kit includes the necessary hardware, so we put the speaker in place, screw it into the kick panel, install your grill and we're ready to put them in the car.

We're going to start by removing our door sill plates so we can pull off our factory kick panels. Now remove the kick panel. This is a replacement kick panel so it doesn't have any hardware attaching it. It's just held in place by the edge here. Your factory kick panel will probably have a screw further back you'll have to remove first.

Then you want to connect the speaker wire to your speaker harness. The wire is included with our speaker kit. Now, we connect our speaker wire to the terminals. You want to make sure the wire's going over the top middle of the kick panel. Now we're going to slide our kick panel up into place. Make sure it goes over the edge of the pinch well. There we go.

Now we'll zip tie our wires up and out of the way. The kick panel's going to fit nice and tight with the pinch well. It's going to be held in place in back by your heater box. Using a high powered amplifier or larger driver you can put an additional screw back here to hold it in place. For what we're running right now, this will be fine. We're going to re-install our door sill plate. Just goes over the edge of our carpet, holding the kick panel in place as well.

Once you're finished re-installing your door sill plate, you want to repeat the process on the driver side. Our kick panel speakers look great and they finally give us the sound we're looking for. Installation should only take you around half an hour. You'll be back on the road in no time.
