When to Replace Your Tires

The subtle changes in performance that occur as your tires wear out can be difficult to notice, particularly if your Mustang is also your daily driver. Here are some tips that will help you spot tire problems before they put your ride at risk:

• Check your tread depth regularly. Don’t have a depth gauge? A Lincoln penny can do in pinch — place the penny upside and facing towards you in the outer tread groove. When you can see all of Honest Abe’s head, it’s time to replace your tires.
• Keep your tires properly inflated. Over- or under-inflated tires can produce uneven tread wear, a potentially dangerous problem. Remember that — particularly during the winter — tire pressure can fluctuate rapidly.
• Keep your steering and suspension systems properly maintained. Vibrations, shimmies and other issues are not only dangerous in their own right, they can also cause tires to wear unevenly.
• Look for gouges, bulges, cracks in the sidewall and other signs of tire damage. When the structural integrity of your tires are compromised, it’s important to replace them as soon as possible.
• Replace all four tires at once. If your tires have more than a few thousand miles on them, when one goes it’s important to replace all four. Particularly on rear-wheel drive vehicles like your Mustang, unmatched tires can have a serious impact on performance and safety.
