While full-blown custom show trucks are becoming more and more popular, most truck owners are still using them for what they are meant for, and that's for hauling stuff in the bed. If you've ever loaded stuff in the bed of your pick-up truck, you know at some time or another you've opened the tail gate and let it drop down on the cables. Well, the cables are there for a reason, doing that multiple times can definitely damage a truck over time, and that's where the tailgate assist comes in from DZ. This shocks the amount of your tailgate when you open the tailgate, it will lower it slowly to protect the tailgate from damage. This is pretty easy to install. Today I'm going show you how, using our 2013 F-150.

This particular tailgate assist is going fit your 2007-2014 F-150. The same parts are also available for the 2015-2016. It's going include the shock itself, the insert for the tailgate, the stud that will mount in the tailgate, this plate here which mounts on the actual bed of the truck on a factory location, the tool to remove one of the factory bolts, and lock tight is also included. For this installation use a 3-inch ratchet, 13-mm socket, 5-mm Allen key, 10-mm wrench, and a tape measure.

The tailgate is going to install right here on the driver's side of our F-150. The first part of our installation is to install this nut insert. To do that, you are going to make sure you have a 3/4-inch from the edge of this washer to the edge of the bolt before you start. Here you have 3/4 inch from the flat part of the washer to then end of the bolt. Make sure the nut here is tight against the washer, and we are ready to install. The insert will have to be tightened up into this, none of the hardware actually gets removed, the insert will stay behind. To do this, you need to do 9 360-degree turns. That torque screw with a wrench on it will not do 360 on here, so I am going do just a quarter turn at a time and just count out until we get 9 full rotations. Once it is tight, now we are going to back it out and the insert remains behind. To make sure the insert is tight enough you want to grab the stud next, put it in there and then thread it in, make sure it catches threads and gets tight. Now we are going to take that back out, lock tight it and reinstall.

Now you can see how our tailgate opens with tailgate assist installed. You can grab the handle, step back, and it slowly and safely lowers it down. This is an OEM quality product, very easy to install, and makes a nice upgrade to any F-150. Takes probably 15-20 minutes to install, be back on the road in no-time.
