One of the key features of owning a truck is the tailgate. It allows for easy storage and unloading. However, if you're not careful, when letting it down, it can come crashing down and damage itself or nearby objects. One way to make your tailgate a little safer and last longer is by adding an assist shock to control the tailgate's drop rate.

Today, we're going to improve the lifespan and safety of our tailgate by installing this Dee Zee Tailgate Assist on our project F-150 EcoBoost. Tools you'll need for this installation, a 1/4-inch ratchet, 10mm socket, and a 5mm hex key.

The tailgate assist shock that we're going to be installing today only works on the driver side, so that's where we're going to begin our install. We're going to start off by working on this lower bracket and removing this bolt and loosening this one. Don't completely remove this bolt. All you need to do is loosen it. Take the bracket that was included in the kit and put the roller bolt right here. Then install the provided Allen bolt. Now grab a 5mm hex key and tighten the bolt.

With the lower bracket installed, we can now work on the upper one, and we're going to use the supplied T50 Torx bit to remove the cable. The key provides a protective sheet of film, which we're going to cut in half, and we're going to install 1 piece here to protect it from rubbing, and the other piece right here in the tailgate. Now, you want to make sure the paint is at least somewhat clean before you install this. Then, you can trim off the edges.

Now, the roller part of the shock, the part that can move in and out, this gets installed on the bottom and the body of the shock gets installed on the top. Just lift up on the shock, install the cable, and your installation is finished. Now, we'll show you how it works.

Our tailgate assist is installed. It works great. It's going to make our tailgate a lot safer and last longer. Installation should take you about 15 minutes, and before you know it, you'll be heading down the road.
