So far I've covered most of the basic bolt on modifications to our white Focus ST. I've got a Roush Cold Air Kit, Cobb Downpipe Full Master Exhaust and recently installed a Cobb front mount intercooler. We plan on getting this car back on the DYNO, before we do so, we want to do one more modification, remove our factory spark plugs, replace them with these iridium plugs from NGK. The iridium tips are going to give us a nice consistent spark. These plugs are one heat range colder, making them perfect for high boost application like our Focus.

For this installation you need a 3/8" ratchet, 5/8 " spark plug socket or 5/8 " deep socket 6" extension, 1/4" ratchet,8 mm socket, spark plug gapping tool, and anti-seize.

We being the install by removing the engine cover. The spark plugs are underneath each of these 4 coils located here. If you making a power that you probably want to change your plugs, there's a good possibility you're way in after market colder, a kit like we are. As you can see the colder kit does cover the hardware, so you do have to remove this pipe and move it out of the way, to be able to remove that coil.

Start by disconnecting it from the rubber hose. Next remove the two mounting screws, and disconnect the rubber sleeve. That allows it push it back far enough to be able to reach the hardware to remove it. I'm going to pull up on this wiring harness to access the hardware. Disconnect the plug in the front. A little twist and pull it right out. Spark plugs require a 5/8" socket to remove it. If you have a spark plug socket that this one here, it'll make the job easier, but a standard 5/8" deep socket with an extension will work as well. The spark plugs come out of the box with a gap somewhere between 45 and 50 thousandths. The Focus ST, we suggest between 30 and 32 thousandths.

Make sure you put some anti-seize on before you install it. You are going to want to reinstall the coil. We'll install the harness, plug it back in. Then repeat the process with the other 3. Now we're done, we'll reinstall our cold air kit. Reinstall our engine cover, and your installation is finished. As you can see installing a set of spark plugs in your Focus ST is pretty straightforward. The NGK iridiums are perfect for a higher boost application. For a stock application you wouldn't need the heat range cold air plugs that we're using here. The installation should only take you around 20 minutes. You'll be back one the road in no time.
