NGK Spark Plugs was founded in 1966 as a subsidiary of their parent corporation in Japan. After having great success establishing themselves in the aftermarket while importing their products from Japan
, the company chose to expand by building their first facility in the United States
, in California, in 1976. Gradually, the American operations of NGK Spark Plugs were consolidated in the California facility, which housed all of the company's operations by 1984.
In 1994, the NGK Spark Plugs' expansion continued with the construction of a large campus in West Virginia
to build oxygen sensors. The initial construction of the manufacturing facility was completed in 1995, which signified the beginning of oxygen sensor manufacturing. In 2001, NGK Spark Plugs added a large warehouse to the West Virginia campus. Meanwhile, in 1996, NGK Spark Plugs continued to expand, adding a new technical center in Michigan
, just outside of Detroit
, which soon expanded to include their sales team in 2002 and the corporate headquarters in 2005. In 2008, NGK Spark Plugs began manufacturing spark plugs in the West Virginia facility and, in 2013, the warehouse and distribution center was moved to California
