How exactly does the Wedge-Locking design function? When the bolt is torqued to 28+ ft-lbs, the washer's super-hardened external teeth bite into and clench the bottom of the bolt head and the top surface of the header. Each washer's interfacing, matching cams create a wedge-locking action so the bolts won't come loose.
Since the wedge-locking strategy uses tension instead of friction, exposure to oil promotes the wedge effect. When it's time to change headers, simply loosen the bolts with a wrench, lubricate them and reuse them.
