Detaching your truck's bed is an essential step in many popular modifications. It is part of replacing the bed, installing a new fuel tank, and making cosmetic upgrades. In the steps below, we'll walk you through the process of removing the bed from your Chevy C10, providing you with the knowledge and confidence you need to tackle this project in less than an hour.
Chevy C10 Truck Bed Removal Steps
There are a few things you want to keep in mind. First, it is likely that the bed of an older truck has some very rusted bolts, so it's a good idea to keep a grinder on hand. Second, the truck bed of a Chevy C10 is very heavy, so you'll definitely want to have a few friends help you remove it. If you don't have access to a few extra hands, mounting a truck bed lifting extension onto an engine hoist can also do the trick.
Parts and Tools Needed:
- Rust Penetrating Fluid
- Grinder (optional)
- Engine Hoist (optional)
- Ratchet Wrench
Step 1: Soften Rusty Bolts
Before you begin removing the bolts on your truck's bed, spray some rust penetrating fluid on them. Best results will occur if you let the fluid soak into the bolts overnight.
Step 2: Remove Mounting Bolts
Head underneath the frame of your C10 and locate the mounting bolts connecting the frame to the bed. Use a wrench to remove these bolts along with the washers.
Step 3: Disconnect Wiring Harness
Locate the wiring harness connection point at the base of the frame rail. Unplug the harness wire to disconnect the bed from the frame.
Step 4: Remove Truck Bed
This step is best completed with four people. Place a person on each side of the bed, two on the sides, one at the front, and one at the back. Lift the bed straight up so it detaches from the frame. Next, move the bed away from the frame and set it to the side. Remember that the bed is very heavy, so make sure to test out the weight before moving the bed to avoid any injuries.
Congratulations, you're all done!
