2024 Mustang GT Horsepower Test: How Does it Compare to the S550?

2024 Mustang GT Horsepower Test: How Does it Compare to the S550?

Last Updated December 19, 2023 | Kevin Brent

When our new 2024 Ford Mustang GT arrived, we immediately wanted to test its upgraded Gen 4 Coyote V8 engine on the dyno. We headed to our friends at Revolution Automotive to strap our brand new Velocity Blue GT to the rollers for a test of the 2024 Mustang’s HP. We also brought along our 2018 Mustang GT for a head to head comparison of the gen 3 and gen 4 Coyote engines. Below are the results of our initial testing.

How does the 2024 Mustang GT's Horsepower Compare to the S550?

One of the biggest differences between the S650 and S550 Mustang is the engine. The 2024 S650 Mustang comes equipped with a brand new, 4th-generation 5.0L Coyote V8.

While the S550 generation was eventually able to receive tuning support for it’s gen 3 Coyote engine, it’s unclear at this time whether the S650 Mustang ECU can be tuned. It’s very possible that future tuning support will give more options to customize the 2024 Mustang’s engine.

Compared to the 2nd and 3rd generation Coyotes in the S550, the 2024 Mustang’s engine is designed to produce more horsepower in its stock form. For comparison, the 2nd-gen Coyote, found in the 2015-2017 Mustang GT, made 435 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. The 3rd-gen Coyote, found in 2018-2022 Mustang GT, makes 450 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. We wanted to test for ourselves just how much higher the 2024 Mustang GT's horsepower output is compared to the S550, so we strapped both vehicles to a dyno to see exactly what kind of power these Mustangs can produce in a controlled environment.

Check out the table below for Ford’s spec estimates for the gen 3 and gen 4 Coyote engines. Below the table are the dyno readings from our own test results for comparison.

2024 Mustang GT Horsepower Dyno Readings

The new Gen 4 makes a factory claimed 486 horsepower, up from 460 in the outgoing 2018-2023 Gen 3 GTs. Our 2024 Mustang also has the optional active exhaust, a potential source of extra power. It’s important to mention the dyno tests for both vehicles were performed in 5th gear instead of the more standard 7th. This was because the 10-speed automatic 2024 Mustang hit the speed limiter on the dyno in 7th gear.

We first strapped our 2018 GT with the Gen 3 to get a baseline. This model made a SAE corrected 388 horsepower to the wheels. Then it was time for the new Gen 4 powered 2024 GT. The new 4th-gen Coyote 5.0 V8 managed an SAE corrected 408 horsepower. That's a solid 20 horsepower gain over the Gen 3 Coyote. The torque figures were lower than expected due to an unknown factor we'll need to investigate later.

The key takeaway is the 20 extra horsepower comparing the S550 Mustang to the 2024 S650 Mustang back to back on the same dyno. While 415-420 horsepower figures are floating around online for some gen-4 Coyote Mustangs, there are always differences in dynos and correction factors. SAE correction drops the horsepower estimates slightly. Adjusting to a standard correction, the horsepower for the 2024 Mustang GT was actually 418 horsepower, which is right in line with the higher claims.

There's no doubt the new gen-4 Coyote delivers on its promise of increased power over the gen-3 Coyote. We can't wait to unlock more gains with proper tuning and upgrades like cold air intakes once the aftermarket catches up. For now, we're happy with the extra muscle straight from the factory. The gen-4 era is off to a great start!
