S650 Mustang Lighting Tint Kit Install
Last Updated February 13, 2024 | Kevin BrentTinting the lights on your S650 Mustang is a great way to add custom style to your ride. With the right Mustang headlight tint kit, it's possible to give your Mustang's lights that dark look enthusiasts love while maintaining the majority of the factory light output.
Check out the guide below, for a step-by-step process showing you how to add tint to your 2024 Mustang's lights. Installing tint strips on all of your Mustang's lights is a time-consuming process, but with the right tools and techniques, you'll be back on the road with a new, aggressive look in just a few hours.
How to Tint the Lights on Your 2024 Mustang
Before you begin, it's important to note that this install works best in a warm environment. If your Mustang isn't parked in a location above 70 degrees, then the tint kit will not adhere to the lights correctly.
For this install, we chose the Light Lens Tint Kit from Anchor Room. If you have a slightly different S650 Mustang light tint kit, the steps should be very similar, just be sure to check the instructions.
Before you start your installation, make sure you clean all of the lenses on your S650 Mustang so there are no smudges when you apply the tint. Having good overhead lighting will also make the installation process easier, but do not turn on the car lights until the installation is finished.
Locating the Correct Mustang Lighting Tint Strip
Your Anchor Room S650 Mustang tint kit comes with tint strips for all of the lights on your car. For each of the tint strip pairs, there is an arrow pointing to the set designed for the driver's side. It also comes with instructions letting you know which size tint strip applies to every light.
Adding this many tint strips is not an easy task, so if you do mess up during the installation process, Anchor Room also includes contact information so you can order individual tint replacements at a significantly reduced cost.
Tools and Supplies Needed
- Application Fluid (Water+Soap)
- Water
- Heat Gun
- Squeegee with Felt
- Clean Rag
Step 1: Spray Application Fluid on Marker Light
Using application fluid consisting of 1 part soap to 32 parts water, spray the side marker light thoroughly, so the surface is wet.
Step 2: Spray Tint Strip with Application Fluid
Locate the front marker light tint strip from the kit. It will be labeled “F” for front. The arrow on the kit will point to the driver's side marker light. Coat the front marker light tint strip with application fluid.
Step 3: Align Side Marker Tint Strip
Use your fingers to align the tint strip with the front marker light. Make sure none of the light beneath the tint is showing.
Step 4: Smooth Out the Side Marker Tint Strip
Spray the tint strip with regular water, then use a squeegee to smooth out the tint strip. Start in the middle and work outward to the edges of the light. Make sure any air bubbles are eliminated.
Step 5: Use Heat to Adhere the Side Marker Tint
Apply heat to the front side marker tint strip using a heat gun. The heat will cause the tint strip to soften and adhere to the surface. Continue using the squeegee to remove any air bubbles that appear.
Step 6: Wrap the Side Marker Edges
Use the narrow edge of the squeegee to wrap the side marker tint strip around the edges of the light until the entire surface is covered. Use a heat gun again to adhere the corners of the tint strip. Repeat steps 1-6 for the front marker light on the other side.
Step 7: Apply Mirror Turn Signal Tint Strip
Use the same process in steps 1-6 to apply the mirror turn signal tint strip. Spray with application fluid, apply the tint strip, smooth it out, apply heat, and adhere the tint to the light's edges.
Step 8: Apply Rear Marker Light Tint
Use the same process in steps 1-6 to apply the rear side marker tint strips. Spray with application fluid, apply the tint strip, smooth it out, apply heat, and adhere the tint to the light's edges.
Step 9: Align Third Brake Light
The third brake light tint strip aligns with the top trim line, but the bottom and sides of the strip will need to slide in behind the trim. Begin by applying a liberal amount of fluid to the light. Place the tint strip below the top alignment point then work it up and side to side until the tint strip slides behind the trim on the sides of the light. Then, align the tint strip with the trim at the top of the light.
Step 10: Seal Third Brake Light Tint
Spray water on the tint strip, then smooth out any air bubbles with a squeegee. Apply heat to the entire tint strip, then smooth out the tint strip again, including the edges. Wipe off any remaining fluid with a clean rag.
Step 11: Apply Tint to Rear Reflectors
Repeat steps 1-6 for the rear reflector lights.
Step 12: Align Taillight Tint with Trim Edge
Complete steps 12-15 without adding application fluid. Align the taillight tint strip with the bottom edge of the light, along the top line of the black trim section.
Step 13: Apply Tint to Bottom Taillight section
Make sure the tint strip is centered, then use the squeegee to push up on the tint strip so it adheres to the bottom taillight section. Smooth out the strip so there are no air bubbles. Don't fold in the sides yet. Thoroughly work the tint into the crease between the top and bottom sections of the light with the squeegee.
Step 14: Apply Tint to Top Taillight section
Once the tint is properly seated in the crease, slide the squeegee upwards to adhere the tint strip to the top section of the taillight. Smooth out any air bubbles.
Step 15: Adhere Top and Bottom Taillight Tint Edges
Use your finger to push down the sides of the tint strip and adhere them to the sides of the taillight. You will likely not be able to push down the sections of the tint around the center. This is normal. Push down as much as you can without stretching the material and leave the center section for the next step.
Step 16: Apply Heat to Taillight Tint Corners
Use a heat gun to apply heat to the corner edges of the taillight. The tint will start to stretch. Use your finger to push down the tint as the heat is applied until it adheres to the corner of the light. Then, use the heat gun around the perimeter of the tight and press the remaining tint into the edges of the light using the squeegee. Repeat steps 12-16 on the other 5 taillight sections.
Step 17: Align Tint with Headlight Panels
Spray application fluid on the headlight and the tint strip. Align the headlight tint strip with the bottom of the headlight. The tab at the top of the tint will align with the open section at the top of the light, below the hood. Make sure the two sides of the tint strip slide behind the corners of the fender and the bumper respectively.
Step 18: Slide Headlight Tint Strip Into Position
Adhere the tint strip to the headlight and slide it upwards so it settles behind the fender and bumper corners. Make sure the tint covers the whole light.
Step 19: Apply Heat and Smooth Out Headlight Tint
Use a heat gun to apply heat across the light. This is the largest tint section, so it will create some larger air pockets. While you are applying the heat, use the squeegee to work out the air bubbles. Start from the center and slide the squeegee towards the edges. Keep smoothing out the headlight tint strip until no more air pockets are visible.
Step 20: Apply Third Brake Light Tint Strip
The third brake light will be the most difficult to reach. You'll need to reach across your Mustang to apply the tint. Spray the light with application fluid, line up the tint strip, apply heat, and smooth it out with your finger.
Congratulations! Your installation is finished.
