How To Install a Shift Knob on an S650 Mustang
Last Updated February 23, 2024 | Bill TumasThe S650 Mustang is still fresh off the assembly line for many owners. With some aftermarket parts still taking time to release, many enthusiasts are looking for any way to customize their 2024 Mustang and help it stand out.
Adding a 2024 Mustang shift knob is an easy installation that can add personality to your 2024 Mustang’s interior. A 2024 Mustang shift knob is a great customization option for the look and feel of the center console. If you’re looking for a simple way to differentiate your Mustang from the stock look, follow the steps below to install a new S650 Mustang shift knob.
2024 Mustang Shift Knob Install Instructions
For this installation, we used the new Automatic 2024 Mustang Barton shift knob. This shifter is a direct-fit replacement for the factory setup, so the installation process should be the same for any aftermarket kit. Expect an installation time of around half an hour.
Required Tools:
- Plastic Pry Bar
- Phillips Head Screwdriver
- Wire Cutters (Optional)
Step 1: Remove Front Console Pad
Use your fingers to remove the rubber pad at the base of the console. If your Mustang model has a charge plate, you’ll need to work around it.
Step 2: Remove Shifter Boot Trim Pieces
Pull up on the plastic trim piece around the shifter to remove it and access the lower trim section. Release each of the trim clips on the lower trim section. You may need a plastic pry bar to help unclip the first few connection points.
Step 3: Remove Shifter Shaft Screws
Lift the lower trim section to access the screws at the base of the shifter shaft. Use a Phillips-head screwdriver to remove the screws on both sides of the shaft.
Once the screws are removed, slide the boot and shifter off of the shaft and set them aside.
Step 4: Remove Plastic Retainer Ring
At the base of the shifter boot is a plastic retainer ring glued onto the fabric. Push down on the sides of the fabric to separate the retainer ring and remove it from the assembly.
Step 5: Insert New Shifter Handle Into Shifter Boot
Take the supplied shifter handle and push it through the shifter boot. Make sure the screw hole at the base of the handle is facing the driver’s side. The shifter boot should rest in a small groove near the base of the shifter handle.
Step 6: Secure New Shifter Handle to Shift Boot
Secure the new shifter handle to the boot by tightening a zip tie around the groove connecting the boot to the handle. Cut the excess zip tie length with a wire cutter. Pull the handle back through the top face of the boot, so it is ready to reinstall.
Step 7: Install New Billet Adapter
Head back into the cabin and place a towel or rag at the base of the shifter to catch any loose screws. Slide the supplied billet adapter down the shifter shaft and line it up with the factory screw holes. Then, reinstall the factory screws.
Step 8: Insert Return Springs
Insert the two supplied return springs in the two holes on the side of the billet adapter closest to you.
Step 9: Reinstall Shifter Boot
Take the new handle and shifter boot and slide them onto the shifter shaft. Line up the screw hole on the side of the handle with the corresponding hole on the shaft. Install the screw to secure the handle, then reinstall the lower trim piece.
Make sure that when you press down, you can smoothly move the shifter.
Step 10: Reinstall Shifter Trim Pieces
Reinstall the upper plastic trim piece by pressing down on it with your hands. Then, reinsert the front console pad.
Step 11: Add Loctite to Shifter Knob Threads
A small bottle of Loctite is included with your kit. Wrap a paper towel around the shifter handle and spread a layer of fluid on the threads.
Step 12: Align New Shifter Knob
Twist the shifter knob onto the threads on the handle. The shifter knob may not be straight when fully bottomed out, so make sure to align the lettering on the shift knob with the console. Let the Loctite set overnight before using the new shift knob.
