When you open the door of your classic Mustang, one of the first things you're going to see is the door sill plate, yet for some reason it's one of the last things people think about when they're restoring their interiors. These pieces take a lot of abuse over the years. As you can see our originals are pretty beat up. If you prefer the factory look we offer both standard and Ford Tooling reproductions, but if you're looking for something a little more unique, we offer these stainless steel light up plates from Scott Drake.

The light up door sill plates are going to install just like the factory ones using the factory holes. The wiring for the horse goes to your courtesy lights so the horse is only lit up when your doors are open. We're going to be installing a set of these in our '69 Mach I project car.

For this installation, you'll need a Phillips head screwdriver, a small screwdriver or pick, and a pair of wire strippers. Once you remove the four screws that hold the factory door sill plate on, we have to access the pin switch door to wire up our new light up door sill plates. To do that, you're going to have to take the kick panel off.

Now we're going to pull the door light switch out to get to the wiring. Simply give it a good pull. You may have to use a pick to get underneath it. We're looking for the black wire with the blue stripe. Now we're going to use the supplied wiretap to connect the red wire to that wire there. We're going to fish the other end of our harness back into the opening here, back down to our kick panel area. Then we're going to reinstall our door switch.

Once we fish the harness down we have got to find a good place for the ground. There's no good screws in the area, let's put a little one right up in here. Now we're going to install the supplied power converter and check our lights. Once you've tested you're going to reconnect to the harness going to the door sill and fish this wire down through the door sill area. Once you fish the wire to the door sill you're going to tuck the wires and the power converter inside the kick panel area.

We're ready to reinstall our kick panel and install our door sill plate. We're going to plug in our door sill plate. Make sure the wire fits flush and doesn't get where any of the screws go, and our installation's finished.

If you're looking to customize your mustang, a Scott Drake lighted door sill plate should definitely be on your list. Even if you're interior is bone stock, they're a nice addition that requires no permanent modifications and installs in about 30 minutes. You'll be back on the road in no time.
