Alternators & Generators
The Evolution From Generator to AlternatorAn alternator is standard equipment in every Mustang, but that wasn’t always the case. In the early days, the Mustang’s electrical power was provided by a generator instead.
Unlike a Mustang alternator, which produces an alternating current (AC) that alternately reverses direction (thus, the term “alternating”), a generator produces a direct current (DC) that only travels in one direction. In modern Mustangs, DC is still necessary to work in conjunction with the battery, which requires conversion from AC to DC. In newer Mustangs, the vehicle’s on-board computer regulates the AC’s power output to prevent damage to the battery.
How Does the Mustang Alternator Function? The crankshaft serves as the Mustang alternator’s driving force. The operation of the Mustang crankshaft causes the movement of Mustang belts that turn the alternator and generates an electrical charge. The generated electricity is then sent to and charges the Mustang battery. The fully charged battery is capable of providing power to the vehicle’s electrical components.
What Causes a Mustang Alternator to Fail? While an electrical malfunction is often attributed to a dead or damaged battery, a Mustang alternator is also a common source of electrical failure. If you hear a loud grinding noise coming from the alternator, it’s typically a sign that it is not working properly and may need to be replaced. This sound usually signifies that the alternator’s needle bearings are breaking down and wearing unevenly, which will eventually cause the alternator to fail. The best course of action is to order a new Mustang alternator from CJ Pony Parts at the first sign of trouble.
