Robert Paxton McCulloch made a major contribution to the automotive world by introducing the original centrifugal supercharger back in 1937, and has remained an industry leader in forced induction technology ever since. Paxton's original reciprocating ball design was originally developed by McCulloch as an air pump for the purpose of recirculating air aboard United States Navy Submarines during World War II, and McCulloch saw the opportunity to improve automotive performance with the same design.
