1964.5 Mustang Parts
On March 9, 1964, Ford assembled thousands of brand-new 1964 Ford Mustang parts to create the first ever Mustang. It was unveiled at the World's Fair in New York on April 17, with 22,000 orders secured by the end of the day. The car and the many 1964 Mustang parts came in coupe and convertible format, with three different engines. Many of the 64 Mustang parts were based on the design of the Ford Falcon initially, with a similar horizontal speedometer and many of the Falcon parts from the under hood being mechanically similar to the 1964 Mustang parts. Production of 1964 Ford Mustang parts ran from March to the end of July in 1964 and ended up consisting of 121,538 sales in those few short months. The new 1964.5 Mustang featured a short deck, long hood, and lightweight which, coupled with solid engines, made it the perfect combination of style and performance. The 1964.5 Mustang was exactly what Americans were looking for at the time, and it showed in the first year's sales. Not only that, it also made the covers of Time and Newsweek and was the pace car for the Indy 500 in 1964. The new 1964.5 Mustang may have been the most popular automotive launch in all history to that point.
During the Mustang's first few months, the 1964.5 Mustang's performance wasn't as evident as it was in later years. To start, it was only available with a 105 horsepower 170 cu I-6 and two V8s, a 260 cu and a 289 cu, with 164 horsepower and 210 horsepower, respectively. Despite these early performance limitations, customers of the 1964.5 Mustang weren't deterred. These early Mustangs were well equipped otherwise, allowing consumers to get a high quality, reliable car with a solid performance at an affordable price. Today, many 1964.5 Mustangs remain on the road or in garages, and thousands of parts exist to keep them running well.
