A leaking or “open” system can result in moisture polluting the refrigerant oil in the air conditioning system. One of the functions of the accumulator or filter drier is to absorb any moisture in the system through the use of a desiccant bag. The desiccant in the accumulator or filter drier will hold a maximum of one tablespoon of moisture and will become saturated within a few hours of exposure to the atmosphere. Since it’s impossible to determine the length of time a leaking system has been exposed to the atmosphere, or empty of refrigerant, replacing the accumulator or filter drier is crucial.
