2024+ Mustang Cat-Back Exhaust Install Instructions
Before You Get Started
Make sure you have a safe way to raise your Mustang and gain access to the exhaust system underneath the car. While having a lift makes an exhaust swap much easier, it isn't a necessity. Backing your Mustang up onto a set of ramps and chocking the front wheels gives you plenty of room to work. You could also use a jack and jack stands to lift your S650, but you'll have less room underneath the car.
For this installation, we used the MBRP race cat-back exhaust system for the 2024 Mustang fastback GT. This system is a direct-fit replacement for the factory exhaust, so the install process shown should be the same for any aftermarket kit. Expect an installation time of around one hour.
Required Tools:
- ⅜” Ratchet
- 13 mm Deep Socket
- 15 mm Deep Socket
- 8 mm Allen Key
- 2 ½” Whole Saw
- 9/16” Socket
Step 1: Remove Belly Pan
Remove the two screws at the base of the belly pan. Then, fold back the panel and remove the front screws. Set the belly pan aside.
Step 2: Disconnect Insulator Brackets
Unscrew the bolts on the two Insulator brackets. Slide the insulator bracket off of the subframe.
Step 3: Loosen Exhaust Clamps
Move to the front of the exhaust and locate the two clamps connecting the mid-pipe to the catalytic converter. Use a screwdriver to bend back the two clamp tabs. Next, use a wrench to loosen the four bolts holding the clamps in place. Do not fully remove the bolts yet.
Step 4: Pull Out Factory Exhaust
Slide the clamps towards the back of the exhaust and push the entire exhaust assembly towards the rear of the car until the muffler hanger arms come out of the factory hangers.
Make sure you have a second pair of hands helping to hold the two ends of the exhaust system.
Step 5: Retrieve Factory Clamps and Hangers
Remove the mid-pipe clamps and main hangers from the factory exhaust system to reuse on the new system.
Step 6: Bend Factory Hanger Bracket
There is a hanger bracket at the rear end of the exhaust system. If you are having trouble removing the exhaust system, bend the bracket towards the pipe so it is easier to remove the stock exhaust.
Step 7: Reinstall Factory Clamps
Reinsert the clamps onto the ends of the exposed pipes. Be sure to orient the nuts toward the passenger side of the car.
Step 8: Install New H-Pipe
Insert the h-pipe into the brackets. Be sure to support the opposite end of the pipe with a jack while you are installing the pipe. Tighten the clamp bolts, but don’t tighten them all the way to leave room for adjustments later.
Step 9: Reinstall Factory Hanger
Slide the hanger insulator bracket onto the extension pipe with the hook facing towards the front of the car. Press the hangers onto the hanger arms on the tailpipe. Be sure the hook on the hanger is facing towards the body of the car. If they're facing towards the exhaust tips, they won't be able to hang on the exhaust hanger bracket.
Step 10: Install New Extension Exhaust Pipe
Slide the tailpipe into the mid-pipe and attach the clamp between the pipes. Hook the hanger onto the slot in the exhaust insulator bracket. Tighten down the clamp bolt but don’t tighten it all the way.
Step 11: Install New Muffler
Slide the support rod for the new muffler into the rear hanger slot. Place the muffler into position and attach the factory clamp. Connect the extension pipe to the muffler and tighten down the clamp bolt, but don’t tighten it all the way.
Step 12: Install New Exhaust Tip
Slide the exhaust tip onto the end of the muffler and position it so it is aligned with the rear of your Mustang. Repeat steps 9-12 on the other side of the exhaust system.
Step 13: Reinstall Hanger Bolts
Reinstall the factory hanger bolts on both sides of the exhaust system to secure the main insulator brackets. Tighten down the bolts.
Step 14: Adjust and Tighten Clamps and Bolts
With your new exhaust system installed, take a look at the alignment and reposition any pipes or brackets if necessary. Tighten down all clamp bolts to secure the exhaust pipes.
Step 15: Tighten Exhaust Tip Bolts
Make sure the exhaust tips are aligned properly. Tighten down the bolts on both exhaust tips to secure them.
Congratulations! Your installation is finished.
