Today we are going to be installing a Drake muscle Car Shorty Antenna on our 2013 Mustang, Gotta Have It Race. A shorty antenna has been a popular upgrade for the '79-'09 Mustangs and are now available for the 2010 through 2013. Drake offers the antenna in two finishes, a billet finish, as well as a black finish. The antenna comes in three pieces: the base, the cover, and the mast, and Drake provides detailed instructions for installation. The only tool required for the installation is a bezel removal tool which is available from CJ Pony Parts. The part number is HW1509.

We elected to go with the black billet antenna to match the graphics on our Gotta Have It Race car. Step one for installing the antenna is to simply unthread the factory mast. Place the mast aside. Now, you want to grab your removal tool so you can remove the base of the antenna. The removal tool has four prongs on it to match up with the four holes around the base. Wind it up and turn to remove. You want to remove the metal insert from the factory base as well as the rubber sleeve in the bottom, as both parts will be used on the new antenna.

Now, you install a rubber grommet onto your new billet base. Simply stretch into place. There's a little lip that will hold it on. There are two plastic alignment valves inside the billet antenna that line up with the two slots on the original antenna itself. Now, you want to reinstall a factory sleeve to make sure the antenna doesn't fall down under the quarter panel; you can use the new mast to hold it in place. Put a couple threads in, pull the antenna up, slide the insert down over it, and begin to thread it on. So we get a few threads. You can remove the mast. Get your insert tool that you used to remove it, and thread it in, thread it on.

Now, you want to get your billet base cover and the mast, place the base cover on top, put the mast through, begin to thread it so it gets tight, turn both from about a quarter turn, and the installation is finished. The only one special tool required. This installation is pretty straightforward. It should take you no more than about 10 to 15 minutes to install your antenna. You should see no adverse effect to your radio reception whatsoever and you'll be back on the road in no time.
