A 5.0L V8 is a great candidate for camshaft or valvetrain component upgrades. A performance camshaft provides a distinct exhaust note and tons of untapped power.

An aftermarket camshaft will alter your Mustang’s engine timing. You get more air with every rotation, increasing horsepower. You can select camshafts that range from mild to aggressive. Each will give you different amounts of power.

The most performance-oriented cams offer the largest top-end increases. This means less power down low, but huge increases at high RPM. Another benefit of performance camshafts is the distinct “loping” exhaust note. It's a sound reminiscent of classic muscle cars.

With an all-out Mustang performance build, it’s recommended you work back-to-front. That means starting with exhaust upgrades, then working your way towards the engine. You should already have performance headers in place before installing the new camshaft.
