Your Mustang transmission is one of the most important parts of your car. No matter what year Mustang you have, your Mustang transmission uses many parts, including gears and the Mustang driveshaft, to transmit power from the Mustang engine to the Mustang rear axle, and also keep the engine in the peak performance range.

Early on, the standard Mustang transmission was a 3-speed manual, with an optional 4-speed manual available. However, starting with the Fox Body, a Mustang 5 speed transmission was offered, eventually becoming standard, which became very popular for many years. In fact, a Mustang 5 speed manual transmission was available until 2010, when it was replaced with a 6-speed Mustang manual transmission for better performance and more efficiency. In fact, many classic Mustang owners with the 3-speed or 4-speed Mustang transmission have chosen to upgrade to a Mustang 5 speed transmission to get better performance.

While a Mustang manual transmission upgrade is generally a major installation process, it is one that can be done on your own. CJ's installation team demonstrates this using a 1967 Mustang convertible, switching out the 3-speed Mustang manual transmission and switching it to modern T-5 Mustang transmission parts. Over the years, as performance increased on manual transmissions, automatic Mustang transmissions followed suit. In classic Mustangs, the only automatic was a 3-speed Mustang transmission, which remained until the Fox Body, which added a new 4-speed Mustang transmission. Then, in 2005, a 5-speed automatic transmission was introduced, followed by a 6-speed auto in 2011.

Typically, when you're dealing with your Mustang transmission, an expert is recommended for most major repair work. However, maintaining your Mustang transmission by changing the fluid and filter can greatly extend the life of the transmission and make your Mustang shift much smoother, and is work you can do yourself.
