If you already own a 1994-2004 Ford Mustang and are ready to get some more performance out of your car, check out our recommended engine mods below that will help you get much higher power levels. Although the SN95 was a top-notch contender back in its day, it’ll need a little bit of help to put out numbers that can compete with modern sports cars.
Plus, you can check out our in-depth guide to the SN95 Mustang’s history if you want a full run-down on the design, performance, and special variants of the 1994-2004 Mustangs.
Note that for the early V8 engine used from 1994-1995, the actual displacement is technically 4.9 liters (Ford rounds up to 5.0, as some astute owners like to point out). It's also worth pointing out that the SN95 generation is when Ford was transitioning from single overhead cam to dual overhead cam engines, resulting in some drastic changes for their V8 configuration. The V6 option would change from overhead valve to single overhead cam with the next generation, the S197.

How to Increase Your 1994-2004 SN95 Mustang’s Horsepower
Though milder than modern Mustangs and susceptible to slight power loss over the years, the 1994-2004 SN95 is still a robust platform. Better still, there is massive potential for horsepower increases if you want to get some more performance out of your pony. Just by looking at the curb weights of the Mustang generations, you can see that the relative lightness of the SN95 also means there's potential for a better power-to-weight ratio.
Below, we look at some of the most popular and effective upgrades that you can make to your 1994-2004 Mustang GT. There are lots of mods for every type of driver, whether you’re new to the aftermarket scene or a seasoned pro.
SN95 Mustang Cold Air Intakes
With a cold air intake, you’re not getting a ton of immediate extra power. However, these affordable mods can make a big difference in throttle response, giving you a better pedal feel as you accelerate. Moreover, you open up a lot of doors when it comes to increasing power down the road. Combined with an aftermarket exhaust kit and/or chip tune, a cold air intake can be an integral part of ramping up horsepower and torque.
SN95 Mustang Electronic Tuners
There’s no need to spend hours wrenching away when an electronic tune can simply be plugged into your Mustang’s computer. Adding one helps you unlock power in your engine that wasn’t available in stock form. Plus, there are lots of ways to customize your tune for the driving applications you use your pony for. Combined with a cold air intake, this is an easy and popular increase your 1994-2004 Mustang GT's horsepower at a reasonable price.
SN95 Mustang Superchargers
For a Mustang drag car or a daily driver that needs some extra oomph, adding some forced induction with a supercharger is the best-known way to seriously add lots of power (think hundreds of horsepower instead of just dozens). Installing a supercharger is more involved than some of the other bolt-on parts shown here, and the cost will be more expensive as well, but if you’re truly looking to take your SN95 to the next level, a supercharger is a must-have for your engine.
SN95 Mustang Engine Swap
If you’re not up for squeezing more power out of your SN95 engine and you want to truly modernize your performance levels, a new crate engine swap will give you maximum potential. Take a look at our guide on how to put a Coyote engine in a New Edge Mustang to learn more about what the process entails.
