How Do You Know if the Cylinder Head Is Damaged?

A cylinder head, like the name suggests, sits on top of the bank of cylinders in the engine. The cylinder head houses valves, valve springs, inlet ports and spark plugs. A 1964 Mustang cylinder head attaches to the cylinder block via head bolts and rubber seals.

The rubber gaskets are the first parts to wear out. You can detect a worn out seal by looking for oil leaks. If you drive your ‘Stang over a prolonged period with improper seals, water might seep into the cylinder head and damage the metal surface.

Similarly, springs and valves might get damaged over time. A less responsive engine could be a result of damaged valves. Improper valves or valve seats might cause a loss in compression and reduced output.
