The distributor distributes energy to each spark plug for firing. A rotor spins and touches contacts on the cap which completes the path for electricity. These contacts eventually become worn and need replaced. You can replace the cap and rotor, or you can replace the whole distributor for a new fresh unit. This will provide you with important new components such as the distributor gear and o-ring to contain oil. A new distributor will also look much better than your old oxidized distributor.

This distributor is equipped with a cast iron distributor gear. Cast iron gears are meant to be used with flat tappet camshafts in some 1985 Mustangs and older Mustangs. Later Fox Bodies used steel distributor gears with their hydraulic roller camshafts. This distributor should be used when you have a flat tappet camshaft. If you have an aftermarket camshaft, consult the company that made the camshaft to ensure the correct gear is used.
