1974 Ford Bronco VIN Decoder

Last Updated June 20, 2024 | Kevin Brent

Determining the right restoration parts for your vintage '74 Bronco can feel overwhelming. The biggest challenge is figuring out the original components specific to your Bronco year. However, there's a simple solution to overcome this obstacle: decoding the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and data plate of your 1974 Bronco.

You can make this process easier by using a Bronco VIN Decoder. This tool allows you to effortlessly locate the necessary parts for your restoration project. Decoding the VIN let's you discover important details like the series, body style, transmission, axle ratio, and color of your '74 Bronco. You can also determine the engine code to help you restore your Bronco to its original condition. This information helps you identify any aftermarket components that might have been added by previous owners.

1974 Bronco VIN Number Location

Finding the VIN on your first-generation Bronco is a straightforward task once you know where to look. The most ideal spot to locate the VIN is on the frame rail positioned below the engine, just before the firewall. Reading the VIN directly from the engine bay can be difficult due to the engine configuration. If the VIN stamp is not easily legible from the engine bay, try turning the wheel as far right as it can go and using a camera to capture a picture of the VIN from behind the wheel well.

1974 Bronco VIN Plate Location

The full VIN plate is inside the face of the glove compartment door. It includes codes containing your '74 Bronco's production information. The top line of the data plate displays the following code categories: color, type, body, transmission, axle, and DSO.

1974 Bronco Trim Packages

Explorer Special Package

The seasonal option group known as the Explorer Special package shared similarities with the Ranger trim. It was available in eye-catching Grabber Blue or Burnt Orange colors, accompanied by matching "random stripe" pattern cloth seats. The package also boasted an "Explorer" badge on the glovebox and a distinctive "Explorer" spare tire cover.

The Bronco Explorer holds a high level of rarity since it was exclusively released during the springtime as a strategy to boost truck sales. With primarily cosmetic distinctions, it can be challenging to determine its authenticity at first glance today. A closer look at the unique cloth pattern on the seats provides a more reliable means of authentication. Some owners opt to enhance their base Broncos to resemble Explorers.
