Pertronix was founded in 1962 as a manufacturer of lighting—driving and fog lights for heavy duty trucks. However, in the early 1970s, a Pertronix engineer came up with an idea for an electronic ignition system that would eliminate the condenser and points in distributors. This idea quickly became the Pertronix Ignitor and was initially marketed in commercial markets. While this product gained rapid acceptance in the commercial markets, Pertronix continued to limit it to those areas until automotive enthusiasts began using these products because of the amazing performance that it offered.

Based upon the Ignitor technology, Pertronix launched complete electronic distributors in 1985, yet continued to market them to commercial markets with great success. Meanwhile, Pertronix remained active in lighting until selling that division in 1990, finally adopting the Pertronix name a short time later. The newly renamed company also shifted their emphasis to automotive applications for their ignition systems, and Pertronix added over 80 new applications for their ignition products in recent years. These new products and the expansion of their California facility has accounted for the explosive growth Pertronix has experienced in recent years. As of the end of 2012, Pertronix has sold over 3.5 million Ignitors.
