1985 Mustang Transmission

Does your 1985 Mustang transmission leave you wanting more? More torque? More control? More power between shifts? Depending on which transmission you have, there are a few different ways to address these issues. The 1985 Mustang came with either a 4-speed automatic transmission with overdrive or a 5-speed manual transmission. This was only the second year of the AOD transmission in the Mustang. The AOD transmission is not what most would consider a sporty transmission: Drivers are limited to shifting from first gear to drive to overdrive. The automatic shifts can occur well below red line leaving drivers wanting more out of their 1985 Mustang transmission. The second generation T-5 transmission in the 1985 Mustang was a great improvement over previous Mustang manual transmissions. This 1985 Mustang transmission features improved gear sets with a wider ratio when compared to the previous T-5 transmission. This 1985 Mustang transmission could pass for light racing, but drivers shouldn’t expect it to handle high horsepower demands.

1985 Transmission

Improving the 1985 Mustang AOD Transmission

If you plan on ramping up power production under the hood, you would be wise to upgrade your 1985 Mustang transmission. A key note to remember: The stock 1985 Mustang transmissions were not built for high power or high torque capability. Some Mustang owners find this out the hard way — by damaging parts of their transmission after they’ve made some serious power upgrades.

Here are some options for improvements for the AOD transmission:

• Install an Automatic Shift Improver Kit — a shift kit can help to eliminate soft and sluggish shifting, provide crisp shifts between gears and diminish shift overlap.
• Performance Valve Body — this is like a shift improver kit, but can produce even greater precision.
• Performance Servo — improves shift feeling and timing.
• Automatic Shifter — gain control over shifts with a premium automatic shifter.

Some Mustang owners choose to make these upgrades to their 1985 Mustang transmission whereas others prefer to swap out the AOD transmission for Ford’s World Class T5 5-speed transmission.

Improving the T-5 5-speed Manual Transmission

The manual 1985 Mustang transmission can be rebuilt with higher quality components to handle greater power demands. A transmission rebuild can improve control, shifting and torque capacity. However, a rebuild does require quite a few parts:

• T-5 Rebuild Kit — includes bearings, springs, seals, synchronizer blocker rings, inserts, frictions, thrust washers, races and snap rings.
• Steel Bellhousing
• Steel Slip Yoke
• Heavy Duty Input Shaft
