1985 Transmission

The 1985 Mustang came with either a 4-speed AOD automatic transmission with overdrive or a 5-speed T-5 manual transmission. The AOD is not what most would consider a sporty transmission. Drivers are limited to shifting from first gear, to drive, to overdrive, with the shifts happening well below the red line. The T-5 transmission is a great improvement, featuring better gear sets and a wide ratio. The T-5 could pass for light racing, but drivers should go aftermarket to handle high horsepower demands.

If you plan on ramping up power production under the hood, it's wise to upgrade your transmission as well. Generally, enthusiasts do this in one of two ways: rebuilding or replacing. Rebuilding the transmission with higher quality components will allow your application to handle greater power demands. Swapping your stock system with an aftermarket setup can greatly improve control, shifting, and torque capacity.

Whether you've got the AOD or T-5 in your 1985 Mustang, we carry everything you need from high-quality brands like ARP, B&M, and Ford.
