One thing that the owner of any older car is going to have to deal with is weatherstripping. My Fox Body Mustang here is 27 years old. Rubber simply doesn't last that long. It's going to dry out and cause all kinds of issues. I'm hearing a lot of air rushing into my hatch area, and it's getting some water back there, so I know it's time for a new hatchback weatherstrip. Today we're gonna show you how to install it.

Replacing the hatchback weatherstripping not only seals the hatch better, in many cases a proper seal will help get rid of some of the rattles that are very common in the Fox Body. This hatch weatherstripping will be a direct replacement for the factory weatherstrip on your 1979 through 1993 Mustang hatchback.

Okay, the first step is we need to remove our factory weatherstrip. So to do that, we're gonna start be removing this panel here, and then loosen up all the other panels to get it off. There's gonna be two screws up top, and one down in the spare tire well. The center screw is removed. Now we're gonna flip the carpet up, and to get the piece off there will be one more screw at the bottom. Then you gotta remove the screw on the side.

To properly install the weatherstrip, what we're gonna do now is remove this panel here. Loosen all the top screws all the way around, so we can pull the panels back, and get the weatherstrip seated properly when we install the new piece. Okay, with everything loose, now we can remove the factory weatherstrip. What we're gonna do now is just get some sort of a generic cleaner. It doesn't matter what you use, but we're gonna clean the whole edge up before we install our new weatherstripping.

Okay, so with it clean, now we're ready to install our new weatherstrip. What you're gonna want to do, start right here in the middle, right where you took the other one off. This edge, you want it facing outward. So basically just put it over, and then press it down. Just work your way around. Just make sure it is seated, pushed all the way down. There's a metal tab in there that will kind of hold it in place. Now when we get down here, it will be a little bit too long. That is actually on purpose. Make sure you got a good seal. Then you're just gonna cut it to fit.

Once it's cut and sealed, now we can actually go back and install all the screws removed from our panel. With the last screw in, we can reinstall the cover for the spare tire well and the carpet, and our installation is finished.

Our new hatchback weatherstripping fits great and best of all, it's gonna keep the trunk sealed. It's also gonna help with the rattling from the hatch itself. As far as the installation goes, it's pretty straightforward. Because of the new weatherstripping, you may have to adjust the striker, but beyond that, the only tool needed is a Phillips head screw driver. Figure the installation should take you around an hour to an hour and a half. You'll be back on the road in no time.
